Today’s Friday Fuel is inspired by a funny video I watched this week and my own personal struggle with saying “I’m sorry” way too much. As women, we have a tendency to want to be liked which leads us to being more apologetic to the point where we have adopted the behavior of saying “I’m sorry” as a filler or anytime we start a conversation with someone. Ugh!
Comedian, Amy Schumer, created an entertaining sketch featuring four successful female panelists going off on a constant succession of increasingly absurd apologies. This article includes the video and some interesting insights on the topic. The video is obviously over dramatic but it provokes a certain level of discomfort and familiarity.
One of the main reasons women adopt this behavior is s a lack of confidence. Here is a quick article on how to gain confidence. Start putting these suggestions into practice – sit at the table, sit taller and speak up. Be a physical presence and own your voice and opinion.
“Be confident. Too many days are wasted comparing ourselves to others and wishing to be something we aren’t. Everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it is only when you accept everything you are – and aren’t – that you will truly succeed.”
